Brief Autobiography:
I was born in the southern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois in November of 1984. I am the older of two girls. My sister, Julie, is two years younger than me. As a child of a single-parent household, my extended family has always been part of my life. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a teacher. As a young child, I used to force my sister into playing school with me. I was even known to tie her down until she would be my student. In junior high, I started to baby sit for my youth group leaders’ children. Their son has a developmental disorder and requires a variety of therapy, including Music Therapy. He has inspired me to help those who need it most so I decided to go to college as a Music Therapy major. However, the music aspect became too difficult to me and I decided to change my major to my education. I knew I could still help those who need to be loved and require extra assistance. I hope one day to go on and further my degree to include Special Education.
Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that a classroom not only needs to be a place of learning, but also a safe haven. The world we live in today has become a very unfriendly place, especially to children. I want my classroom to be a place where my students know they will be safe and where they can come if they need to talk to someone. I want to be the teacher to whom students come back to year after year to say hello. I remember looking forward to seeing and visiting with my elementary teachers even after I moved on to junior and senior high school.
I will strive to meet the needs of each and every one of my individual students. I understand that each student learns in his or her own way. I will do my best to get to know each of my students so I can plan according to their needs. I will vary my activities to allow each individual to have the experiences that will best help him or her to learn. I understand that I cannot make each student a success story. However, I plan to do all that I can to help them climb their individual achievement ladders.
