Assessment:
Assessment is defined as a measure of the degree to which instructional objectives have been attained. For this particular unit the students will be assessed throughout the unit at a various points. However, there will be a culminating activity that the students will be assessed at the end by completing one of the three activities available on this page. The three activities are written above grade level, at grade level, and below grade level. You have a choice of assigning the students their culminating activity for the unit or you can give the students the choice of completing one of the three activities below. The students will know that the activity will be used as their final assessment for this unit on text structure.

 

Culminating Activity

Choice1

 

Above Grade Level

Written for the student above-grade-level. The student would be a book critic for the newspaper, and would have to look at critically at the Charlotte’s Web and write a review to be published. The article would have to address the text structure of the story. Items that should be included are: characterizations, setting, plot, and conflict. The student would have to use his or her higher order thinking skills and apply their knowledge of text structure to complete this task.

 

Grading

The students would be assessed using a grading rubric. The rubric should include items of text structure: characterizations, setting, plot, and conflict. The student will be evaluated on creativity, organization, neatness, and grammatical errors.

Choice 2

At Grade Level

Written for the student on-grade-level. The student would be responsible for complete a book jacket with a short written excerpt. The student’s except should include these items a written description of characters, setting, plot, and conflict. The student would have to use his or her higher order thinking skills and apply their knowledge of texture structure to complete this task.

Grading

The students would be assessed using a grading rubric. The rubric should include items of text structure: characterization, the setting, plot and conflict. The student will be evaluated on creativity, organization, neatness and grammatical errors.

Choice 3

Below Grade Level

Written for the student below-grade-level. The student would be responsible for complete a story map. The story map would include listing the characters and brief description, the setting, the development of plot and conflict. The student would have to use their basic knowledge of text structure to complete this task.

Grading

The students would be assessed using a grading rubric. The rubric would include items: complete concept map, accurate descriptions of characters, recognized the development of plot, and identified the conflict. The student would be evaluated on organization, neatness and grammatical errors.
