We are going to focus our reading comprehension while using a Concept of Definition Map using the word 'vote'. We have already read the text about your rights to vote, after we discussed what we previously know about voting. Now, we are going to apply this knowledge on voting to creating new ideas and comparing it to activities in our daily lives for our definition map.

Steps to completing a Concept of Definition Map:
1. Identify the term to be defined
2. Define the term and think of a comparison term to help guide understanding
3. Compare the definition of the term to other objects/activities that are similar to that term
4. Give some examples that pertain to the term being defined
Model:
1. The term we will be defining is voting
2. The definition of voting is to make your voice and opinions heard in order to make the country a place where we have made a difference
3. Other activities that are similar are: raising your hand to answer a question when the teacher wants your opinion on a certain topic; telling your mom or dad what you want for dinner after they ask; deciding who will walk the dog after school
4. Some examples of voting are: Presidential election, Midterm elections, School Board elections
Guided Practice:
Now, we are going to put a Concept of a Definition Map together for voting. I want you to use what you already knew about voting and what you have learned today to fill out the concept map. You will work as a group to collaborate your thoughts. I will be around to work with each group to make sure that everyone is comprehending what we have covered so far. Please make sure to ask questions if you are confused about something that comes up in your discussion or needs clarification pertaining to voting or democracy.
